What does Amani Africa need that you might be able to contribute?
Shipping a container to Rwanda is expensive and time-consuming, so we prefer to purchase materials and supplies in-country if possible. We also believe that it is more beneficial to accept cash donations to purchase school materials, sports equipment, and other products in Rwanda and contribute to the local economy rather than importing products from the United States.
However, there are certain products that are incredibly expensive to purchase in Africa, and it simply wouldn’t make sense to buy some items there.
We need in-kind donations of the following products:
Laptop computers
For the office:
- We only have two computers in our Rwanda office for all of our staff. More laptop computers would greatly increase our efficiency and ability to track our programs.
For the Amani School:
- We need to equip the computer lab at the Amani Vocational School with durable laptop computers. They will be used to teach computer skills to vulnerable youth and will also be available to the Nyamata community at large.
- We ask that all donated computers be in working condition. The Geek Squad doesn’t service Rwanda!
Computer software:
- Just like computers, it is very difficult to get computer software in Rwanda. We are looking for educational programs and reference software that can be used in the computer lab at the Amani Vocational School.
Digital cameras:/p>
- The Amani volunteer coaches in Rwanda are eager to document our regular activities.
- We are also planning to organize a photography workshop for street children in the fall of 2009! Many of the pictures on our website were actually taken by the children living at the Nyamirambo Home for Children on Elizabeth Davis’s camera. Taking pictures and viewing them on the screen provides unlimited joy and entertainment for these children. It is a fun way for them to express themselves and to document their daily activities and challenges. We are working to collect at least 20 cameras by fall 2009 to be used in our photography workshops.
If you are able to help with any of these needs, please send an email to Elizabeth Davis at Elizabeth@AfricaGrassroots.org. We will coordinate a way to get your donations to the children of Amani. Luckily, the network of Americans going to Rwanda is very close. If you have an extra laptop lying around, we will find someone going to Kigali and stick it in his/her luggage!
In-kind donations are tax-deductible.
